Macross Frontier premiered yesterday in Japan! The series celebrates the 25th anniversary of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross TV series (1982~1983), and is chronologically subsequent to Macross 7 (1994~1996). This third TV series features Earth's latest main variable fighter, the VF-25 and a new spaceship called the Macross Frontier. Here's the opening song "Triangular" sung by Maaya Sakamoto and composed by Yoko Kanno.




The story is set on the year 2059 featuring the 25th colonial fleet, dubbed the Macross Frontier, en route near the galactic center. In the first episode, Ranka Lee (Megumi Nakajima) is heading to the concert of Macross Frontier's top Galaxy Network idol, Sheryl Nome (Aya Endo), and encounters a pilot trainee named Alto Saotome (Yuichi Nakamura) when suddenly mysterious insectoid biomechanical alien mecha (called "Vajra", バジュラ in the official site) attacks the fleet. The story will also feature Ranka's older brother, the veteran pilot Ozma Lee, and the U.N. Forces' latest main variable fighter, the VF-25.

I saw the pilot, very nice show. The animation is well done too.

when i saw the pilot my brain exploded (in a good way!)

i might go as far as pick up the original DVD boxed set once it's released.

Ep 6 was awesome! The final part of the episode made me like the ED 'Diamond Crevasse' more. Next episode will have lots of pew-pew and things blowing up! Can't wait.

dang! Macross Frontier episode 7 is EPIC! Combining the songs with battle scenes was smoothly done! Awesome battle scenes, high-end CGs, superb music, I can't believe I was watching just a TV series...

Yeah, Episode 7 was EPIC. Seems like Satelite blew off their budget on this episode, I hope they still have more left for the rest of the series.

try getting the version from Anime In Action. Mas mabilis sila magtapos ng subs and mas correct ang translation nila. I compared with the one from Shinsen subs and when I checked the words used by AIA - I just had to delete Shinsen Subs episodes and redownload everything from AIA instead.

P.S. MP4 ang gamit nila ha, make sure you have either CCP or K-Lite codec pack first. Mahirap kung Quicktime player lang kasi the file extension sometimes is different from the actual codec used (video container is different from video codec, IE: an AVI file with .H264 encoding)

I read somewhere that there will be a final cut of episode 1, containing scenes from the deculture edition and the broadcast one. It'll be on the DVD release.

Just tried the AIA fansubs suggested by RTB...The mp4 format is more crisp than divx/xvid, but AIA does not include the "karaoke lyrics" in their subs, and songs are supposed to be one of the strong points of any Macross series...

It's not fun to have fighting all the time. :> Ep 8 made me LOL a lot even if the animation quality's all over the place. Ranka's carrot song was... catchy. D: Sheryl 'going commando' was lulz. And... I wonder if the VF-1 on top of the school was the one used in the DYRL movie... *_*

In any case I'm really looking forward to the next ep, which will be about Mikhail and Klan's past. Interesting...

OST's out! I absolutely loved all songs, probably best OST of the year (next to True Tear's) so far IMHO.

There's a lot of vocal tracks, and one Sheryl song that hasn't appeared in the anime yet, "Welcome to My Fanclub's Night" which is one of the best tracks. The transition between that track to Sheryl's "What 'bout my star" is also pretty cool.

Oh and here's an interesting fact: according to the booklet, the opening song "Triangular" is the theme song of an in-universe TV drama involving Hikaru, Misa and Minmay.

Some of the BG themes sound like other famous themes though, in particular "Big Boys" which sounds like the "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme, and "Alto's Theme" which sounds like something from BSG.

The official Japanese website for the Macross Frontier science-fiction anime series has posted (in 1MB or 500KB bandwidth) a promotional video for "All That VF," a newly animated short film that will assemble the different transformable variable fighters from the history of the Macross anime franchise. "All That VF," like the Macross Frontier television series itself, marks the 25th anniversary of the first Macross series. The title is a reference to "All That Gundam," an animated video created just for an 1989 event that featured all the major mobile suit robots from the first 10 years of the Gundam anime franchise. The initial pressings of July's Macross Frontier volume 1 Blu-ray Disc and DVD and August's Macross Zero Blu-ray Disc Box will each include an ID code which will allow owners to access the complete anime short online.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow

Sheryl heads out to Gallia 4 for concerts, with bodyguard Alto in tow. Gallia 4 turns out to be the base of the UN Spacy's 33rd Marines, made up of troublemaker, full-sized Zentraedi, led by clones of Vrilithawai, Exedore and Khravshera. Some of the giants revolt and take the officers and Sheryl's entourage hostage. as an exhausted Sheryl is overtaken by her fever. The rebels begin moving nuclear weapons from the base stockpiles. Alto tries to make a break for it on his VF-25, but is caught in a firefight. But help comes in time in the form of Mikhail's VF-25, carrying wing mounted speaker pods ala Basara's Fire Valkyrie. And to add to the fun, Ranka is in the copilot seat, singing - proof that music and culture is still the best way to beat rogue Zentraedi. So Ranka has taken the fore in the Minmay role for this Macross series at least. And it's the first time I saw a songstress make giant Zentreadi soldiers faint from massive nosebleeds for doing a cutesy song-and-dance number! I love it! WOOHOO Nanase eats bento. Look at the rice ball emo-yotsuba-.gif . Plus Nanase/Ranka yuriness! emo-yotsuba-cool.gif Alto pulls a pretty decent version of the Fokker Feint. And male Zentraedi can now pilot Queadlunn Reas, rather than it being primarily a Meltran (female Zentraedi) mecha of the past.

This is probably the best and most dramatic shots of Ranka I've seen in awhile. She doesn't exude her usual cutesy-loli look, but of a more mature and sensitive persona. And her eyes are so beautiful and mysterious.
